Look: Chunky!

To celebrate the official opening of Sleepover’s doors, we submit for your (and the Tumblr Theme Garden’s) approval: Chunky. Inspired by Meredith Mandel’s “Chunk” typeface over at The League of Moveable Type, Chunky is a cheerful and flexible little fella. I’ll give you the tour:

The titular face Chunk is served via Typekit. As far as I can tell, one can’t go about distributing Chunk to all of Tumblr so I’m letting it fall back (rather successfully, if I say so myself) to Rockwell. Admittedly, it’s more than a few steps to get Chunk running, but it’s easy and doesn’t cost a dime. And perhaps the gents at Typekit can pick up some new customers.

I wanted to put my theme code skills to the test, so I included extensive Appearance options. While just about every color can be set, I didn’t want an overwhelming number of choices. Instead, I’m using semi-transparent RGBa color values for many elements so that a single color change reflects through many pieces of the design.

RGBa wasn’t a complete solution however: dark themes need light content. So, included in the Appearance settings is an option to flip the scheme of all the RGBa-driven elements to lighter counterparts.

One last bit: the title flag has no less than 4 shadows. The nifty thing about this? Setting both pairs of shadows to the same value creates a pretty lovely faux-3D effect.

If you want to start running Chunky on your blog, check out the setup instructions. You can view an example of the theme and I happen to use the theme on my own blog.
